Singapore Good Class Bungalow 1819-2015

Talisman, 2016

Tracing the development of landed housing in Singapore from its early days as a colony to the present day, this book offers a 21st century look at the Bungalow by noted academic, architect and author Robert Powell.

Expertly photographed by Albert Lim, Powell’s longtime associate, this new book references all the major architectural styles in Singapore, showcasing a hundred bungalows, past and present. The Good Class Bungalow Areas (GCBAs) were established by Singapore to protect the island’s limited stock of landed property. Politically motivated to ensure a choice of housing and to retain high-wealth citizens, it had an unforeseen spin-off effect of boosting the development and creativity of the architectural profession in Singapore.

For most young graduates emerging from university their very first commission after serving an apprenticeship with an established practice is often a private landed property. The GCBAs have facilitated a steady flow of commissions to creative younger architects spurring the expansion of the profession into the region and beyond. Sixteen recent bungalows showcasing the latest developments in contemporary design are included. They are all located in the Good Class Bungalow Areas
