Kalth Ridge Resort Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh, India 2012

All great architecture springs from an appreciation of the uniqueness of the site. Thus the design of the Kalth Ridge Resort is a response to its location in the foothills of the Himalayas. The resort’s very name is evocative of the high promontory and commanding scenic views.

The design has emerged from a parallel process involving a response to site constraints and opportunities including topography, hydrology, views, existing ecology and land ownership, and to the microclimate of the site. At the outset the views were carefully recorded, the existing topography studied and the steep slopes critically analysed. The hydrology was determined and existing trees mapped. The client’s brief forms an important part of this process along with a search for a form and architectural expression that differentiates the design from other development.

The intention is to create an idyllic retreat capitalizing on the profound sense of solitude, silence and privacy enjoyed by the site and the sublime experience of living in close proximity to and in balance with nature. The ridge has a cool climate that is especially welcoming in the hottest months of the year. There is a peaceful and calming ambience enabling residents to relax and put aside the noise, stress and pollution of the city

The design pays scrupulous attention to the ecology of the locality and creates a way of life for the residents, which is both pleasurable and sustainable. The landscape design sets out to enhance this experience and provides a variety of habitats incorporating native flora to attract selected fauna.
